Helicopter Parenting

I’m sure you’ve heard the term.

If you haven’t, a helicopter parent is (according to Wikipedia) a parent who pays extremely close attention to his or her child’s or children’s experiences and problems, particularly at educational institutions. In other words, one that won’t let the student think for themselves but instead is overly involved in every detail of the student’s life including, in some instances, completing a Master Promissory Note for a student loan (no kidding on that one). It’s ridiculous and it’s got to stop!

I noticed someone remarking online about their conversation with a friend and local business owner. She was lamenting the scarcity of twenty-something employees who could think on their feet. “Can you believe some of their parents call to arrange the job interview?,” she remarked. “These kids can’t make a decision. If there’s an issue in the store and I’m not there, they get right on the phone. They don’t know how to problem solve on the simplest levels.”

Foster W. Cline, M.D. and Jim Fay coined and defined “helicopter parents” very precisely in a section on “ineffective parenting styles” in their 1990 book Parenting with Love and Logic: Teaching Children Responsibility (updated version here). Most recently, TIME Magazine had an article about this very subject. So, here’s the deal folks. It’s not your life you are living vicariously through your children. It is their life. They must take responsibility. They must be involved and an active participant in their own life. The skills that are learned via basic problem solving as a child carry through to adulthood. If these skills aren’t learned the child becomes an ineffective adult.

Yes, it’s important not to just leave the student up to their own devices because they are not the most responsible beings and are prone to lapses in judgement. I understand that. However, there is a fine line. You must remember that this student is well on their way to being an adult and legally they must be in charge of their own finances, etc. You cannot go online and register them in courses each semester “because they are busy” … what happens when they need to go online and pay their mortgage, are you going to do that for them as well because they’re only going to get busier as they age.

Please, for the love of God, stop controlling every little thing they do. Make them call us to inquire about their account. Yes, you can sit right next to them and feed them questions if you have to … but it’s best that they learn for themselves. Allow them to make mistakes. Sometimes you have to learn the hard way or you won’t learn at all. Most important, do not call us up and immediately start in with how you feel we are “screwing over” your student or that you’re prepared to “go to the news” with your disgust. Your disgust is primarily a response to the fact that your student hasn’t followed instructions or made inquiries or basically done what they needed to do.

I’m just being honest here. I know people who managed to go through their entire college career and never visit my office once. Which means, that they looked stuff up and made the appropriate calls and handled their business in a timely manner. It can be done folks. When something is asked for it helps to read the request fully so as not to miss anything. It also helps to read the website or emails or the catalog. READ. It’s not that hard. Of course, shit happens. I get that. Sometimes it can’t be avoided and we’re definitely here to help. When you come in with guns a blazin’ though it really doesn’t make us what to help you at all. And please, if you are 30 years old and in Graduate School … don’t have your mom call to handle your business for you … not cool.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Hey y’all! I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving and remembers just how grateful we all should be for the many blessings in our life. Though you will often hear me lamenting about my finances, etc. I truly am thankful for each and every day. I have food on the table, a roof over my head, and family/friends who love me.

I hope you enjoy watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade wherever you are. I hope that you take time out from the chaos to relax with your family and/or friends and spend some good quality time together. I hope that you even get a little Charlie Brown in between the football and the fun. Most of all, I hope that you truly take time to relax and remember what is really important in this crazy life … that you are surrounded by family and/or friends who love you and that you take a moment to really enjoy each other’s company. We are only on this earth a short time. Let’s make the most of it! God bless! :)

The Muppets: Bohemian Rhapsody

BEST EVERRRRRRRRRRRR.

Oh. My. God. How fantastic is this video!?! Please watch…

I laughed and laughed and laughed some more.

For one, I seriously love The Muppets, for real, yo. Second, I love them even more this time of year because I’m repeating the John Denver and The Muppets: A Christmas Together over and over until everyone around me wants to take it away. Third, and most important, they never forget the legacy that Jim Henson left behind and continually remain relevant in a wholesome way. I love that they took this song and didn’t necessarily re-write it but left out parts or mixed a word, etc. so that it would be more kid-friendly. Seriously. These people are geniuses.

StyleScope

Hey y’all! Over on one of my favorite blogs, Young House Love, they wrote about this Color Profile quiz featured on the Home Goods website and I just had to share … you know how I love the quizzes!

My StyleScope is Earthy Casual which I think pretty much represents me. I tend to go for warm earthy colors and I’m not big on trends. Though I think I’m a little more traditional than this states.

For me, it says I need to focus on maximizing my space, and boy are they correct. I have a condo and feel like there isn’t much I can do to make it feel less cluttered.

This quiz was created by Deborah Needleman and you may recognize her as the founding editor-in-chief of Domino magazine (which is sadly no longer in print). And though I think a lot of the quiz is dead on … other parts … not so much. Overall this was a fun little quiz. Be sure to share your results with me … and what you thought about them! :)

Rosanna

Hey y’all! Welcome to another Music Monday. I have been fighting off some sort of cold/flu nastiness but I’m feeling a bit better today. Friday night was my friend’s birthday party and Saturday I drove to St. Simon’s Island to meet Amanda for the day. Sunday I met the folks for lunch so I really didn’t get much recuperation time. However, this week is a short one since Thanksgiving is on Thursday. YAY!

Today I’m featuring “Rosanna” by TOTO. Every time I hear this song on the radio I have to sing along. There’s no escaping the beat … the lyrics are easy to follow … and overall it’s just fun. Here’s the hilarious 80s video for y’all to watch. Seriously sometimes I really wonder what the heck we were thinking back then with our clothing and hair choices. Goodness gracious!

All I wanna do when I wake up in the morning is see your eyes
Rosanna, Rosanna
I never thought that a girl like you could ever care for me, Rosanna.

All I wanna do in the middle of the evening is hold you tight
Rosanna, Rosanna
I didn’t know you were looking for more than I could ever be

Chorus:
Not quite a year since she went away, Rosanna yeah
Now she’s gone and I have to say
Meet you all the way,
Meet you all the way, Rosanna yeah
Meet you all the way
Meet you all the way, Rosanna yeah

I can see your face still shining through the window on the other side
Rosanna, Rosanna
I didn’t know that a girl like you could make me feel so sad, Rosanna

All I wanna tell you is now you’ll never ever have to compromise
Rosanna, Rosanna
I never thought that losing you could ever hurt so bad

Admissions 101

Okay y’all … free of charge I’m going to supply you with 7 basics (that should be worked on prior to the student’s senior year) that I’m calling ”Admissions 101″. This is designed to help you figure out (mostly aimed toward parents) what it takes to get in to college … because I’m that nice! Or basically because I’m sick of people not looking anything up and just assuming they know how the system works.

I will be doing a whole separate post on how not to be a “Helicopter Parent” and also a post on “Financial Aid 101″ so be on the look out!

  1. GET EDUCATED. The college admissions process has changed since you went through it (and is extremely confusing for those who never have), and is affected by many factors, including today’s economic hard times.
  2. LOOK AROUND. Don’t rely solely on school websites — they’re primarily marketing tools. Sites such as www.collegeboard.com and www.petersons.com offer basic information plus unbiased views.
  3. VISIT SCHOOLS. What you can do: set an itinerary, book the hotel, gas up the car, pack your suitcase. What you can’t do: choose all the schools, call to arrange interviews, or call to make a reservation on a tour or at an information session.
  4. FINANCIAL AID. Fill out the FAFSA. This form is needed for any kind of financial aid, and requires a tax return and other information your student doesn’t have. Go to www.fafsa.ed.gov to learn more.
  5. BE REALISTIC. Your son or daughter should be applying to at least one safety (high probability of acceptance), one match (reasonable probability), and one reach (medium to low probability—but who knows?) school. You can suggest or guide him or her to choices that meet that mix. Look at the stats for the school based on last years average admittance and that will let you know your chances.
  6. BE ORGANIZED. Creating a calendar with important dates (deadlines for applications, teacher recommendations, transcript requests, financial aid requests, etc.) at the beginning of the application process is useful.
  7. DO YOUR HOMEWORK. Most applications require students to exhibit knowledge of the school , much as you are expected to know about a company when on a job interview. If requested, you can help in this area by researching on the Internet, and finding out if there are alumni in your area who conduct informational interviews.

Of course, any questions … feel free to ask me! :)

where am I?

Seriously folks. I don’t want to bore you with the stress that is my life right now. I want change, dammit, but until then I need to just continue working and focusing on the positive … right? I’m so sorry that I’ve neglected my readers … my family … my friends.

This past week I traveled down to visit grandparents. It was so nice to spend some quality time with them. Grandpa will be 80 this year. Can’t hardly believe that one day they won’t be around any more. It was good to visit. Dad and I went to Boca Grande on Saturday. It was chilly but beautiful and so nice to lie on the beach for a few hours.

This Friday I’m traveling to Brunswick to visit with a friend and on Saturday is my friend Heather’s birthday. Should be a good time and a welcome diversion. I hope that y’all are doing well. I’ll hopefully be back to my old self in no time. :-)

Sunny Days…

Hey y’all! Today is Sesame Street‘s 40th birthday! I can hardly believe it … seems like just yesterday I was watching the show as a child. Of course then watching it with my sisters and then watching it with the children I babysat. My mom tells me that as a child, I would insist on watching the show again that afternoon even though I had seen it that morning and that I would insist it was a different episode even though it was a repeat. Sesame Street and Mr. Rogers got me through my childhood with an emotional attachment that I rarely see in others. I still get sucked in when I catch an episode now…

Sunny Day
Sweepin’ the clouds away
On my way to where the air is sweet
Can you tell me how to get,
How to get to Sesame Street
Come and play
Everything’s A-OK
Friendly neighbors there
That’s where we meet
Can you tell me how to get
How to get to Sesame Street
It’s a magic carpet ride
Every door will open wide
To Happy people like you–
Happy people like
What a beautiful
Sunny Day
Sweepin’ the clouds away
On my way to where the air is sweet
Can you tell me how to get,
How to get to Sesame street…

In honor of Sesame Street’s 40th birthday, Bakerella created Street Pops and they’re amazing! She’s super talented anyway … but these are fantastic. Seriously folks. You gotta check them out! And for your viewing pleasure I’m also attaching the video for “It’s not easy being green”. The Muppets have always held a special place in my heart (especially when they sang with John Denver for a Christmas album) and Kermit The Frog was always a favorite. Remember when he used to do the “Hi-ho, Kermit the Frog here!” for Sesame Street News Flash? My favorite was the one where he interviewed Don Music, who is trying to write “Mary Had a Little Lamb”, but he can’t come up with a word that rhymes with “snow”. Kermit suggests that Don try another angle, which leads to Don writing the hit song “Mary Had a Bicycle”.

In closing I’d just like to remind y’all that the late Jim Henson was the mastermind behind all of this and without him I don’t know what childrens television programming would be like today. God bless him, may he rest in peace. On September 26, 1992, Henson was posthumously awarded the Courage of Conscience Award for being a “Humanitarian, muppeteer, producer and director of films for children that encourage tolerance, interracial values, equality and fair play.” He was such a brilliant man and he is surely missed. I know he’s watching us and all he’s created and I hope he’s smiling. :)
