The Lazy Worker’s Way to Success

These 6 tips were featured on MSN yesterday by Anthony Balderrama, CareerBuilder writer (click the link to view the entire article) …

Once upon a time, work was a busy place. You showed up, worked hard, stayed late during your busiest periods and then went home. Today, many people don’t escape work. Before they even arrive at the office, they’ve already sent a dozen e-mails from their phones and held teleconferences with people all over the country. Once you’re actually at work, things are even crazier.

The workplace is different today than it was 10, 20 and 30 years ago, but you should be able to pull back in some areas. You don’t need to overextend yourself to the point that you never relax.

Here are some ways you can be a “slacker” at work and benefit from it:

E-mail can wait. No, really, it can. You don’t have to answer an e-mail the moment it pops up on your screen. Unless you’re waiting for that one message that could make or break your career, you should designate time to check e-mails so that you don’t get distracted while doing other tasks. You can even disable the new message icon and noise alert to help with this.

Saying ‘no’ won’t get you fired. If the boss or someone comes to you with a task that’s part of your core job duties, by all means accept it. If you’re drowning in work, however, telling co-workers that you just can’t get to their request right now won’t necessarily hurt you. Tactfully explain that you’d like to help them but you’ve got too much on your plate shows you care about the quality and promptness of your work.

Don’t multitask. The ability to simultaneously talk on the phone, send an e-mail and heat up the meatballs for the monthly potluck is an admirable quality but not necessarily the most beneficial. Multitasking has become the de facto approach to daily operations in many workplaces. The problem is that we often end up doing a little of everything and never making much progress on any one task.

Give yourself a break. Literally, just get away from work for five minutes. Take a walk around the floor or step outside for some fresh air. Without Saturday and Sunday off, you’d probably go a little stir-crazy. Think of brief breaks throughout the day as small-scale versions of weekends. You’ll return with a clear head and produce better-quality work.

Don’t eat lunch at your desk. Eating at your desk can be an occasional necessity, either because you’re close to a deadline or you’re in a productive zone that you don’t want to interrupt. Having your lunch in front of a computer every day, however, doesn’t give your eyes or your mind time to relax. You might feel like a slacker if you’re the only one taking your sandwich outside for 30 minutes, but your mental health is worth it.

Schedule some “me” time. Go into your calendar and block off a period of time for whatever work you need to do without interruption. Treat that time as if it were an important appointment with your boss and consider it non-negotiable. If someone tries to schedule a meeting with you, tell him or her that you’re busy but can try for another time. If possible, book a conference room so you won’t be interrupted by a chatty co-worker or a phone call.

Alright folks … what do you think? I struggle with being too much of an overachiever to the point that I give up when I know things aren’t going to be perfect. It’s awful. If I can’t get an A, or if the relationship is going to take more work than I think it’s worth, if the project is going to not turn out to be what I want it to be … I’ve struggled to maintain the notion that it will be alright if it’s not perfect and, of course, I’m still working on it. ;-)

this is fantastic…

Okay … that is all … get back to work! ;-)

Home on Monday

Today is the last ‘Monday’ song I could find … but if anyone thinks of some please let me know.

Since I’ve run out of ‘Monday’ songs I’m going to start on a new theme and y’all have a chance to vote on which you’d like to see! YAY! So without further adieu here is the Little River Band singing “Home on Monday”.

Hot Blooded

Today is Saturday … glorious Saturday. Oh, Saturday, the day I can sleep in and partake in some serious R&R … oh how I love thee! Today I’m sharing with you the video for “Hot Blooded” by Foreigner, well, because I AM HOT BLOODED! Oh yeah … that’s right … I said it. You can’t handle the hotness! ;-)

According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary: hot–blood·ed

Pronunciation: \-ˈblə-dəd\
Function: adjective
Date: 1598

1 : easily excited : passionate
2 of a horse : having Arab or Thoroughbred ancestors

hot–blood·ed·ness noun

Today, I’m going on a blind date (of sorts). We’ll see how things go. But to get myself pumped up for the torture that is meeting someone for the very first time I’m playing this song over and over again in my head. Gotta keep the positive vibes flowin! ;-)

I’m including the lyrics so you can sing along with me …

Well, I’m hot blooded, check it and see
I got a fever of a hundred and three
Come on baby, do you do more than dance?
I’m hot blooded, I’m hot blooded
You don’t have to read my mind, to know what I have in mind
Honey you oughta know
Now you move so fine, let me lay it on the line
I wanna know what you’re doin after the show
Now its up to you, we can make a secret rendezvous
Just me and you, I’ll show you lovin like you never knew
Thats why, I’m hot blooded, check it and see
I got a fever of a hundred and three
Come on baby, do you do more than dance?
I’m hot blooded, hot blooded
If it feels alright, maybe you can stay all night
Shall I leave you my key?
But you’ve got to give me a sign, come on girl, some kind of sign
Tell me, are you hot mama? you sure look that way to me
Are you old enough? will you be ready when I call your bluff?
Is my timing right? Did you save your love for me tonight?
Yeah I’m hot blooded, check it and see
Feel the fever burning inside of me
Come on baby, do you do more than dance?
I’m hot blooded, I’m hot blooded, I’m hot
Now its up to you, can we make a secret rendezvous?
Oh, before we do, you’ll have to get away from you know who
Well, I’m hot blooded, check it and see
I got a fever of a hundred and three
Come on baby, do you do more than dance?
I’m hot blooded, I’m hot blooded
Hot blooded, every night
Hot blooded, you’re looking so tight
Hot blooded, now you’re driving me wild
Hot blooded, I’m so hot for you, child
Hot blooded, I’m a little bit high
Hot blooded, you’re a little bit shy
Hot blooded, you’re making me sing
Hot blooded, for your sweet sweet thing

And just because I feel like it I’m including the videos for “Feels Like The First Time” and “Waiting For a Girl Like You“ … even though we are meeting for the first time hopefully he has been waiting for a girl like me … hee hee ;-)

Hope y’all are having a wonderful weekend!

Hooked on … a beautiful beach house

familyreunion

Hey there … hope you’re having a wonderful Friday and have some great plans for the weekend! Today I’m once again participating in Julia’s blog party over at Hooked On Houses. Today I’m featuring the Coastal Living Idea House from 2002: Family Reunion (click the link for a PDF of the featured property).

Seriously, y’all … this house is definitely added to the list of things someone needs to buy me! It’s gorgeous. Just the right amount of space and the interior design is top notch. I can’t get enough of this place … I’ve even saved that issue of Coastal Living and peruse it every so often when I feel like dreaming and instead of placing all the pictures here I’m letting you read the article for yourself.

This oceanfront Idea House, located on Bald Head Island, North Carolina, mixes nostalgic beach-home style with modern building technology.

The entry hall immediately establishes the plan’s sense of airiness. An open staircase bends and climbs toward the second-floor landing and 20-foot ceiling. Built-in shelves house a collection of locally made Nantucket lightship baskets, seashells, and beach reads.

The palette is so succinct that colors flow seamlessly throughout the great room’s three areas: living, dining, and sitting. On the room’s two sofas, a tawny silk weave is visually reminiscent of burlap–but surprises the touch with smooth softness. Abundant rattan tables stand ready to hold cocktails or an interrupted book.

The expansive kitchen, separated from the great room by a counter bar, mixes the latest conveniences with contemporary design. For cabinetry, the design team chose dove-tailed maple with Quaker styling and bronze knobs to stay true to the simple aesthetic. Stainless steel appliances and chrome fixtures add reflective accents.

George designed four bedrooms in the main house with a family in mind. In the dormerlike space upstairs, a large bedroom is decorated in marsh browns and greens. Adding a touch of the tropics, carved pineapple–a symbol of welcome used throughout the home–cap a king-size leather and raffia bed. A duneside bedroom is dressed in rich tones defined by dark wood blinds. For impact, designer Linda Woodrum placed the bed against the three windows. In the oceanside bedroom, a palm motif reigns. The accent crops up on neutral bedding, lamps, the rug, even the finials on the canopy bed. Silky to the touch, cotton linens layered in complementary tones whisper of island breezes and lazy afternoons.

The upstairs centers on the study/media area. Just off the staircase and accessed by French doors, this “away room,” as George calls it, offers a handsome retreat.

Room for outdoor living at a beach house is essential. Ideally, you need spaces for entertaining, a lounge area to catch rays, shady porches, and quiet corners for naps. George gave the house all these functions with plenty of decking and porches. A deep porch stretches across the front and to a side, screened porch that opens onto the back porch and deck.

The attached guesthouse serves several purposes. Besides privacy for visitors, it gives family members a getaway from the main house. Outfitted with a full bath, galley kitchen, outdoor shower, pullout sofa, skirted dining table, and TV armoire, this cozy space fills all the needs of a complete house.

Flying high: Earlier this year Ryanair looked into vertical seating options

So, what do you think? Personally, I wouldn’t love staring at someone for a whole flight but if it’s cheap I might actually be persuaded to suffer through! However, there is always the safety factor … and with extra weight I wonder if the plane would be able to manage … hmmm.

Harry and David

This past weekend my mom and I hit up Harry and David. I picked up some coffee and this really cool peanut butter and jelly spreader that allows you to use the different ends for either the peanut butter or the jelly … and it’s color-coded … too cute! But my favorite thing at Harry and David is the Moose Munch! Oh my goodness is this stuff addicting!

The Harry and David store is known for their gift towers. You can get everything from pears and apples to candies and, of course, Moose Munch. The gifts are perfect for the holidays. I, for one, am mostly interested in the flavored coffees. YUMMY. I picked up Witches Brew this time and I can’t wait to try it!

Eternal Flame

Today I’m a little late in sharing my Music Monday post … but in honor of The Bangles coming to town this weekend … I’m giving you a little Eternal Flame this morning. I still have the 1988 Everything album on tape in my car and listen to it often. ENJOY! :-)

Close your eyes, give me your hand, darling
Do you feel my heart beating, do you understand?
Do you feel the same, am I only dreaming?
Is this burning an eternal flame?

I believe it’s meant to be, darling
I watch when you are sleeping, you belong to me
Do you feel the same, am I only dreaming
Or is this burning an eternal flame?

Say my name, sun shines through the rain
A whole life so lonely, and then you come and ease the pain
I don’t want to lose this feeling

Say my name, sun shines through the rain
A whole life so lonely, and then you come and ease the pain
I don’t want to lose this feeling

Close your eyes and give me your hand
Do you feel my heart beating, do you understand?
Do you feel the same, am I only dreaming
Or is this burning an eternal flame?

Is this burning an eternal flame?

An eternal flame?

(Close your eyes and give me your hand
Do you feel my heart beating, do you understand?
Do you feel the same, am I only dreaming
Or is this burning an eternal flame?)

how cool is this idea?

I saw this in the Little White Book from a post they did on finding inspiration from color swatches. The dresses were featured in Martha Stewart and I just love the fact that they’re not matching but they’re not so obviously different. I’ve kept this photo in my files so I’ll have the idea handy should I have the chance to get married one day and I thought I’d share it with you …

Today I’m having an “always a bridesmaid, never a bride” party where me and all my girlfriends will be wearing (hopefully our most hideous) bridesmaid dresses! I can’t wait to see what everyone wears. I’m going to be playing fun wedding music and we’ll just drink and snack and have a good time! Hope y’all are having a great weekend!

Hooked on … a mountain escape

Happy Friday y’all! Once again, I’m participating in Julia‘s blog party. I know I’ve mentioned it before but I absolutely love her site, Hooked on Houses! Plus, she’s introduced me to other fun sites such as Designing Your Dream Home, Design Ties, and The Devine Home. YAY!

 2007-hgtv-dream-home

So, today I’m showcasing one of my most favorite of the HGTV dream homes … a beautiful mountain escape built in 2007 in Winter Park, Colorado, and I’m adding it to the “buy me this” list although I’d really rather it not be bought for me but a duplicate built instead so I can customize it a bit more … hee hee.

WinterPark1

WinterParkPorch

This place is absolutely gorgeous! Here, below, you can see a few pictures of the living room which is located off the foyer. The living room is two story with a beautiful vaulted ceiling and gigantic stone fireplace.

WinterPark2

WinterPark3

Don’t you just love the view from the balcony loft above? Those beams are fantastic! From the living room, you walk past the staircase into the kitchen/dining area.

WinterPark4

WinterPark5

I love how everything is open and flows from one room to the next. The color scheme follows throughout and nothing feels cut off or closed in. Off the back of the house is a dining porch and I just love the table! Talk about outdoorsy … this thing looks like the ultimate in rustic!

WinterParkBackPorch

Past the dining room you enter the master bedroom. Here you will see how inviting a space can truly be. Normally, vaulted ceilings would make a space like this seem too large and not at all intimate. However, the combination of the canopy bed, the draperies, and the intimate nook by the fireplace help to keep it cozy.

WinterPark6

WinterPark7

Here, below, I’ve posted a picture of the tub in the master bath. Don’t you just love how they’ve hung that chandelier over with all the votives!?! I think that is a great idea, however, it must be a pain in the butt to light them all.

WinterPark8

In the Restoration Hardware catalog I saw something similar where they had pillars that were made to look like candles but it was really a regular light fixture which seems much more practical.

PillarCandleChandelier

Moving on we make our way upstairs to the landing which features a balcony overlook into the living room and a front porch with quite a view! Upstairs, the home features two more suites with their own bathrooms and a private back porch. These bedrooms can most certainly be arranged as additional master suites.

WinterPark9

WinterPark10

Last, but not least, we end with another shot of the beautiful front facade on a snowy Colorado day. How gorgeous is that!?! I mean, seriously folks. Someone needs to buy me this! ;-)

WinterParkCO

Okay … let me know your thoughts. Yay or Nay? Would you give an arm or a leg for this lodge or is a beach front cottage more your speed? How about one of both!?! Heck, if we’re dreaming we might as well go all the way, right? Hope y’all have a wonderful weekend planned and don’t forget to check out what everyone else is Hooked On!
