Blackberry? iPhone? Neither?

Today I’m showing y’all  a video of Jerry Seinfeld talking about smart phones. It’s hilarious and almost exactly how I feel about them. I have a Blackberry but I haven’t hooked it up to email or anything so really it’s just an easier keyboard for text messaging. I really thought long and hard about buying the iPhone but couldn’t bring myself to spend that much money. It’s not just the cost of the phone but you also have the increase in your monthly bill due to the addition of internet service, etc. So, needless to say I’ve just been making due. Sometimes I get a little jealous of those with the iPhones because of their cool applications but it’s the same as when I get jealous of those with cable television … I get over it fairly quickly.

Speaking of cable television … y’all know that I don’t have it and instead use rabbit ears. Well, have I mentioned that I’m too lazy (read: poor) to go out and get the converter box so ever since June 12th I haven’t even had local stations. I’ve gone without any form of television for weeks now. I’m amazed at how well I’m handling it. Yesterday on my way home from work I spotted what looked like a tornado off in the distance … which was the weirdest thing to see in person. I mean, I’ve seen them on the news and in movies plenty of times but have never really seen one in person but when I got home I desperately wanted to switch on the news to see what the heck was going on and if I was going to die here soon. Since I don’t have even the local stations I went online and wouldn’t you know, the local news station had a live feed on their website. How cool! I got to listen to them talk about how it was only a waterspout over the river and I was much relieved. It was so nice being able to have access to television without being on the television. So, now I’m thinking I can hold off on the converter box thing even longer … yay ;-)

RIP Michael Jackson

This Monday I’m breaking from the songs that have the word “Monday” in them to feature some of my favorite Michael Jackson songs in honor of this amazingly talented though eccentric individual who passed away last week (they are just links because the videos have disabled embedding). The video posted below is his performance of Dangerous at the MTV Video Music Awards. He was an incredible dancer and performer.

At the age of 5 I announced to my mom that I was going to marry him. I had two of the Michael Jackson “Ken” dolls and all the clothes and accessories. I had the glove and microphone for myself along with the pajamas and several shirts bearing his face. I still have the Thriller album on tape and occasionally listen to it in my car when I’m feeling nostalgic. Though this man was quite disturbed as a result of his awfully abusive childhood, no one can deny his amazing talent. May you rest in peace Michael and may your children remember you for the wonderful individual you were and not for the vicious comments about your life. God bless.

I wanted to include all the Jackson 5 songs I know and love but that wouldn’t be a fair tribute. You can look those up on your own. Michael was amazingly talented beginning with his work with his family band … but here are a few of my favorite MJ songs with him as a solo artist … ENJOY!

Don’t Stop ‘Till You Get Enough

Rock With You

Billie Jean

Bad

Beat It

The Way You Make Me Feel

The Girl Is Mine

Black or White

Thriller

You Are Not Alone

Okay … I couldn’t help it … here’s a medley from the Ed Sullivan Show featuring the Jackson 5 …

Hooked on … baby onesies

Oh my goodness … am I hooked on onesies! I have several friends who are pregnant and in searching for the perfect baby shower gift I’ve come across the best little onesies.

You have the nerdy onesies:

The rocker onesies:

The girly or frilly onesies:

And the adorable boy onesies:

Not to mention there is a whole mess of Dr Seuss onesies:

And holiday themed:

Oh wow. I really need to stop. I could just keep going and going. There are so many great ones out there. I think I have a love of cute onesies because of my mom. As a child she had a onesie for me that said, “I’m a wild and crazy baby!” … keep in mind that I was born in 1979 so that phrase was at the peak of its heyday. Of course I can’t find the onesie online and mom can’t find the picture of me so for now you’ll just have to trust that I really had it. I mean, really, would I make that up?

Let’s Play Pretend

In the wake of Jon & Kate‘s divorce announcement this video voices my thoughts perfectly. A fellow blogger, Travis, (who’s written some articles through Relevant Magazine that I have just thoroughly enjoyed) posted this and I felt compelled to share. I’m not going to go into all the things that bother me about Jon & Kate because then I would just be ranting … not to mention there are so many other worthy things that bother me in this world and since I’m not ranting about them I shouldn’t rant about unworthy celebrities :-) Feel free to leave your thoughts below if you feel so compelled …

Come Monday

GOOOOOD MORNING! I am still on vacation in Los Angeles visiting my sister and having a great time! Today we are headed to San Diego to visit the zoo and my friend Amy, hopefully, if we have time. Because I’m on vacation and when I’m on vacation I immediately think of Jimmy Buffett and boat drinks and palm trees and R&R I’m posting the video for Come Monday. I’m continuing with the theme of Monday songs. This song was released in 1974 on his album Living & Dying in 3/4 Time and and was his first Top 40 hit single. I’m a big fan of Jimmy Buffett as you may remember I recently went to his concert in Tampa at the Ford Amphitheatre. The tailgating was the best part actually … man those Parrotheads sure know how to party. Anyway, here’s the video … enjoy!

Pocket Rockers

Welcome to another edition of Things I Like … this time we’re stepping into the past to talk about Things I Liked (past tense). I want to talk to you a bit about my favorite thing as a child … POCKET ROCKERS! Or, as my sister affectionately called them Pockarockers. Pocket Rockers were my very favorite thing and we still have the player and tapes in mom’s garage (In this second link I gave you it mentions the plastic chain necklaces with the charms and I totally had one!). The Pocket Rockers idea was probably the stupidest invention and was quickly replaced when walk-mans became available. I mean, it played at most two songs on that little tape and you had to carry around a bag full of them (or the belt with the clips) and constantly change them out after each song. BUT, it was awesome for the time when it debuted. I was the first one on my block to get them and I remember sitting in the driveway with my friends and listening to all the tapes. Good times :)

Recently, while listening to Pandora (which I’ve talked about before), I heard Lost In Emotion by Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam and I was immediately transported back to a more innocent time … back when it was cool to wear three socks over top of one another so you could roll them down individually and show the three different colors. Back when you would wear two tank-tops so you could have one hang off the shoulder and show the other underneath. Back when you would peg your jeans (or tight-roll as some people call it). Back when you would be gone all day riding bikes with your friends and stop in for lunch and be home by dark but your mom wouldn’t really worry about you and you never had a cell phone or anything and yet you were still safe because everyone in the neighborhood looked out for one another and would immediately report to your mom if you were doing something you shouldn’t. Back when you were outside most of the day using your imagination to have great fun with your friends playing games like neighborhood tag where you had an entire street to run from each other. Okay, okay, I could go on and on but I know that everyone has their own version of happiness as a child no matter the generation and it’s more about the innocence of childhood than it is about what era at the time you were a child.

So, I’ve included the video for Lost In Emotion … just to transport all those who remember … back to a time in the past … a time of big hair and neon colored clothes … a time of music videos that have nothing to do with the song itself … ENJOY :)

UPDATE: The video link is not working (thanks Jenni for bringing that to my attention) and any other versions of the song found on You Tube are also disabled but I’m going to leave it here so you know what to search for on You Tube, etc. It really is a good video and a perfect example of what I was describing above.

Best cities to be single …

Hey y’all … today I’m on a plane to Los Angeles to visit my sister and take a much needed vacation. My layover is in Las Vegas and I already informed her that because it’s only a four hour drive for her, if I get stuck there somehow without a connecting flight leaving right away, she’s coming and we’re hanging in Las Vegas for a day or so before heading to Los Angeles! We’ll see what happens. Please pray for me that my flight makes it across the country with no problems.

On a much more interesting note, my sister, who is on a constant campaign to get me to move to Los Angeles, which may or may not be a bad thing, whom I love dearly and am honestly considering moving just so I can see her more regularly, sent me this link via Ryan Seacrest‘s blog about the best cities to be single. WOW (That was the longest almost run-on sentence I’ve written as of yet)! Courtesy of the US Census and Who’s Your City, this illustration shows the best and worst cities on a map and really makes me think that living where I do is probably one of the main reasons I’m single ;-)

whosyourcity

I want to know your thoughts. Where do you live? Do you feel this map is an accurate representation of the single population? I think of things like the giant group of single men in San Francisco and remember that the majority of said men are most likely not interested in females so moving there, though the population of men is in my favor, would probably not be beneficial as none of them would be interested in me … hee hee. So, lets hear it folks. Tell me what you think and give me reasons to stay in Florida or reasons to move away and where exactly should I move? Thanks in advance for participating in my very un-scientific survey :-)

New Moon on Monday

Hey there. Welcome to another edition of Music Monday’s. Today I’m posting the video for New Moon on Monday by Duran Duran. The music video has a loosely sketched storyline in which the band appear as underground rebels, organizing a revolt against an oppressive militaristic regime. You may recognize the song once you really listen to it. It was semi popular in 1984 making it to number 10 on the billboard charts.  This video is classic 80s and just all around weird and really has nothing to do with the song itself but that’s what makes it so good.

Hope everyone had a great weekend. Happy Monday y’all … enjoy!

Hooked on … front porches

Hey y’all … I’m participating in today’s Hooked on Houses event and right now I’m hooked on front porches.

col_667

That picture right there is of the Crabapple Cottage featured in Southern Living. It is my very favorite home and if you know me, you know that I love playing around with floor-plans (having taken several years of drafting and auto-CAD). I took this floor-plan out of the magazine and played with it a bit and modified it to fit my design but have basically maintained the integrity of the home. The thing about the home that was most attractive is the giant wrap-around front porch that extends over the garages. It just cries out, “Come visit … stay awhile!” Here below is an element of the front porch that is a necessity as far as I’m concerned … the front porch swing.

frontporchswing

I absolutely love that one and can completely picture it on the porch of my home as mentioned above! One day … some day in the not too distant future I hope. Anyway, I also love front porch rockers … like at Cracker Barrel. I love being able to sit around and rock and chat and just hang with good friends and neighbors.

MaplesInnBarHarborfrontporch

In addition to the rocking chairs on the front porch it is important to have designated areas for eating or relaxing whereby the furniture is grouped into conversation areas. I like the way this long front porch is grouped into a “dining room” and “living room” area.

Front_Porch_2

I’m also including this picture showing Adirondack chairs on the front porch of a seaside cottage. I love this look and can definitely see myself with these chairs one day. I especially love the little cut-outs at the top of they flying seagulls. I think that mine would probably have a starfish or other fish type of cut-out instead of the bird but you get the idea.

front-porch

Last, but not least, I’m including a picture of a hammock on this next front porch (which might actually be a back porch). I love hammock’s in general and growing up we always had one in our back yard and my mom still does, actually. I think this is a fun idea for maybe an upper porch on a seaside cottage but can’t actually picture this for a front porch but I wanted to mention it because it is another option if you’re looking for porch ideas and don’t forget about the fan in the ceiling … it’s a must in the south if you plan on spending any extended time on your porch!

front_porch_1

Okay y’all … that’s it for now. I’ve enjoyed participating and I hope that you got some good ideas from these pictures I’ve posted. Maybe it’s a southern thing but I can’t imagine having a home without a porch … homes that have a front stoop and that’s it just don’t seem as welcoming to me. I especially don’t care for the ones with no overhang above the front door. All I can think about is my poor guests standing in the rain waiting desperately for someone to answer the door so they can come inside. Anyway, that’s all for now. Have a fabulous weekend y’all! :)
